Vintage Find: Opal's Valentines

I recently had the opportunity to rescue some boxes of "old stuff" from a basement before it was all thrown away. Digging through this treasure, I found these. Tucked neatly in an envelope with her name on it, Opal Ross saved her valentines from February 1934. Each are homemade with obvious love, attention, and humor... "Accordion to this, you are my Valentine!" being the outstanding comic gem from the lot.

Opal, whoever you were, you were a heartbreaker.

Happy New Year, Everyone! This week: Homemade Granola

Granola is better when you make it yourself. You get to put just what you want in there... any variety of nuts and things you like go in, all the nuts and things you don't like stay home. It's the most forgiving recipe. Maybe you don't like ginger; maybe you are hardcore into cardamom. That's ok with granola. Granola doesn't judge. Maybe you're out of honey (gasp!) so you throw in some maple syrup instead. Maybe your a crazy person who doesn't eat butter, you can use vegetable oil... though I have to say, butter is better. Scratch that - Butter Is Best. Butter Forever. Butter All the Things. Butter. Butter. Butter.

This makes a huge family sized batch of granola.

Rolled oats 42 oz

coconut, raw

pecans, almonds, 4 cups

sunflower seeds,

walnuts, pepitas,

sesame seeds, etc.

Brown sugar 2/3 cup

Granulated sugar 1/3 cup

Cinnamon 2 Tbsp

Ginger 1/2 Tbsp

Butter, melted 1 lb

Honey 1/2 cup

Preheat your oven to 325

Combine all ingredients in large bowl and stir until incorporated. Use your hands, it's fun!

Spread evenly amongst 2 - 3 sheet pans and bake for 30 minutes, stirring the granola every 10 min. or so... or until golden brown and delicious.

Watch carefully... Granola will burn quickly!

Let granola cool to room temperature before sealing in an airtight container. Once cool, you can add raisins or dried fruit if you are in to that sort of thing. Eat and Enjoy!

Project: Recycled Flannelboard Cat Toys
Time: > 1 hour
Ingredients: felt foods, shredded paper, catnip, thread

So long, long ago I bought a flannelboard food pyramid, complete with a multitude of felt foods, at my local thrift store. I thought, "This has got to be useful. How can I not own this?" Over the years I have added a felt cabbage here, a felt salmon filet there... but I have barely made a dent in my very well stocked felt pantry.

What better way to use up the felt groceries than to make cat toys? What kitty doesn't want to play with a head of broccoli, or a freakishly pink ice cream cone? None that I know.... And being that I seem to only be friends with cat people, what better thing to give as gifts this holiday season?

Using plain felt from the craft store as backing, I simply stitched around the felt food and backing felt with the sewing machine. Be sure to leave a gap for stuffing! For the filling I used shredded paper and a generous sprinkle of dried catnip. After stuffing, I trimmed the excess backing and zig-zagged stitched all around the outside edge, sewing up the hole as I went. Done!

My photo shoot was interrupted, as you can see. These clearly passed quality control! Happy Tuesday!

Project: Spice Tin Planter
Time: >15 minutes
Ingredients: empty spice tin, succulent cutting, potting soil, decorative rocks (optional)

Instructions: More or less self explanatory, right? Be sure to choose cacti or succulents and don't overwater to avoid rust.

These are the perfect size for a window sill or narrow ledge. I'll definitely be making more.

I'm finishing some treats for LOLA goodie bags this week. German stars are one of my favorite holiday crafts. Easy to make (once you get the hang of it), fun for kids and adults alike, and... ohh, pretty!

I made these from recycled book pages, then dipped them in melted beeswax and added a light dusting of gold glitter powder for extra holiday cheer. A loop of baker's twine and you're ready to trim the tree.

You can find instructions on how to fold your own German Stars online is several places (Yo! Google it!) Or you can come to LOLA Giant on December 10 & 11, enter the raffle, and get a goodie bag. Money raised from raffle tickets will be donated to Van Go, Inc., an arts-based social service agency that provides after school and summer job training programs for young people in our community... and also this year's host of LOLA Giant!

New collage blocks are ready! Hopefully I'll get more of them listed in the Etsy shop soon, but for now...

I'm pretty sure my new favorite book is "Your Health and You", a sweet textbook published for Cleveland Public Schools in 1949. It teaches you all about your body and proper hygiene, which apparently includes being polite and listening to your parents (see Chapter 8: Learning to Behave.) The diagram of tonsils and adenoids alone more than proves it's awesomeness.

I just shipped a package of Butternutsquash bracelets to the Craft and Folk Art Museum gift shop in Los Angeles! They should arrive just in time for the opening of their new show by Ann Weber, Love and Other Audacities. Ms. Weber constructs large sculptures exclusively from recycled cardboard... truly amazing for their size and material.

Three of my collage pieces have been selected for Globally Green, a juried exhibition featuring work made from 90% recycled material.

The show opens on March 25th for Final Fridays with the gallery staying open until 9pm. It will hang at the gallery until April 24th.

The 1109 Gallery is the home of the Lawrence Art Guild and is located at 1109 Massachusetts St. in downtown Lawrence, KS.

Today's Tuesday ~~Night~~ Afternoon Project involved going outside! Yay! I feel like I've been quarantined to my couch since December, so it was a welcome activity. The high today was in the mid-60's and sunny... with no wind, which is a rarity indeed!

All signs point to Spring... crocus and hyacinth bulbs are poking up all over.

Last week I started some seeds using plastic containers that my favorite Indian restaurant uses for take-out. A little moist peat in the bottom with the seeds and then pop on the top for an instant mini greenhouse.

Today, I took advantage of the weather and cleaned up the vegetable garden for planting. It is very small, so it didn't take long. I covered the newly turned earth with flour bags recycled from the restaurant to keep the weeds at bay... I also might have nibble on some of those green garlic spouts! I mended the compost bin (zip-ties to the rescue!) and pruned the rosebushes before calling it a day.

It was nice to take a break from working indoors... get some dirt on my hands and "blow the stink off" as my Dad always says. With highs predicted to be in the low 40's for the rest of the week, it's back into the studio with me. I have lots to do to get ready for Art in the Park... it's only 8 weeks away!

These are made from vintage shotgun shell boxes, old glass and brass buttons, brass nails, board game pieces, dictionary pages, and panels from a Fighting Marines comic book... which is one of my all time favorite finds.

Printed by Charlton Comics in the 1950's, Fighting Marines (and also Fighting Air Force, Fighting Army, etc.) is full of anti-Communist propaganda, among other things that tickle my 21st century funny bone. Enjoy!

More than 70 vendors will display finely crafted items such as jewelry, home decor, holiday decorations, furniture, clothing and more. Then enjoy a free cup of coffee or cider at the Cookie Cafe, where a wide assortment of homemade cookies and candy will be available for purchase. Door prizes are given away every hour.

The show is Friday and Saturday at the Central Church of the Nazarene, located at the intersection of 87th & Rosehill Rd in Lenexa, Kansas

The heat wave continues here in Eastern Kansas! While I hide indoors with my air conditioning, I am busy putting up pickles and tomatoes... and making many, many new items for Fall. Oh, Fall, you can't come soon enough!

Lots of deer and woodland creature themes, anatomy and science themes, as well as new colors... Celadon and sage. Gold and amethyst. Copper and cranberry. I am very proud of the new work and can't wait to show you! I will be posting pictures soon, as fresh pieces are being finished everyday.

Finally finished a group of new pendants and earring I've been working on! They made from acrylic with image transfers and recycled sewing pattern tissue set behind them and are finished with hand formed and oxidized brass bails that have been riveted to the pieces using recycled copper wire. I couldn't be more happy with the way they turned out!

I am drawing great inspiration from this piece by Robert Dancik. Paper Mache? You've got to be kidding... I've always thought of paper mache as crude and clumsy... but this is so sophisticated.

I am plotting a paper mache jewelry experiment as I type. What better way to recycle all the papery bits leftover from all my recycled paper projects! It's one of the things that always gets me... what do I do with all the trash I generate by making things out of trash? This revelation may put me one step closer to my dream... a waste-free studio.

The long winter continues.

I have come to the conclusion that maybe a unheated studio in the middle of Kansas wasn't such a good idea... but like the hard scrabble farm folk from which I hail, I make due with what I have. And what I have is a garage and quite possibly the most hard working space heater in America.

A few more weeks and it will be warm enough to venture back out there full time. It can't come soon enough! I lay awake at night and think of all the projects hibernating in there, ever so patiently waiting for me to come wake them up...
